John Ray Onifa, a new champion to watch for


A surprise champion but not surprising to others know him very well. John Ray Onifa declared overall champion in recent toughest Ultra Trail Mapawa 50 held in Mapawa Nature Park, Cagayan de Oro City last Sunday, October 29.

Onifa, completed the race with exemplary time of 7:02:32 beating 129 racers across the country. Following him was the country’s elite trail runner Manolito Divina with 7:18:26 while Kristian Joergensen of Denmark ranked third with finish time of 7:18:29 . Sandi Menchi Abahan, also a country’s elite trail runner declared female champion with the time of 9:09:02, Maria Luisa Prado as second with 10:01:07 and Agustoralin Sabanal as third with 10:28:52

The 26 year old Onifa, who hails from Hamtic, Antique has been active in local racing events especially in trail running. He might be anew to your ears but he is actually not. He was named champion in both recent Salomon Xtrail Run 2017- Subic Leg and  Soleus Cross Country Challenge 2 held in San Mateo, Rizal. And also champion of Banas Guimaras, a 10 mile trail run held in Nueva Valencia, Guimaras.

Recently, he was also the champion of UP 2 UP Marathon in Iloilo City. He made himself to qualify in the 41st Milo Marathon Finals this December. With time of 1:16:03 he ranks third in Iloilo Leg. For him, by attending some trail racing events is his stepping stones to his big dreams.

Onifa’s next big target is TNF Thailand on February 3, 2018. His big dream is to make it to the world’s “holy grail” in trail running which is Ultra Trail du-Mont Bloc (UTMB) someday.

Ultra Trail Mapawa 50 was the last leg of Mapawa Trail Series. Trail Run Mapawa was held on May 28 and Mapawa Trail Marathon on August 13. The said race event was co presented by R.O.X. and Mapawa Nature Park.

At the end of the event, the result concluded to 101 official finishers and with 29 DNF runners.
